March 2026 Update: Important Changes to Flammable Aerosol Waste Disposal in the UK

As a North West waste broker, BWSL keeps a close eye on regulatory shifts that impact our clients — especially in the clinical and hazardous sectors. One key update taking effect from April 2026 directly affects how businesses (and brokers like us) handle flammable aerosols — a common hazardous waste stream from clinics, care homes, dental practices, vets, tattoo studios, garages, and industrial sites.

What’s Changing: Mandatory Digital Hazardous Waste Tracking & Aerosol Classification

From April 2026, the UK’s new mandatory digital hazardous waste tracking system begins rolling out for waste receiving facilities (with brokers and carriers following in 2027). This replaces paper records with a digital footprint for every movement of hazardous waste — including flammable aerosols.

Aerosol cans that are not completely empty (or contain flammable propellants like butane/propane) are classified as hazardous waste under the new rules. Businesses must now:

  • Correctly classify aerosols (flammable, toxic, corrosive, or ecotoxic) using European Waste Catalogue codes.

  • Store safely in secure, ventilated, well-labelled areas (no stacking, away from ignition sources).

  • Collect via licensed carriers (like our vetted partners) — no on-site puncturing/crushing without a T15 exemption.

  • Record accurately within the digital system (within 48 hours for permitted sites).

Failure to comply can lead to fines, enforcement notices, or prosecution — especially if aerosols are misclassified or illegally dumped.

Why This Matters for North West Businesses

Flammable aerosols are widespread in healthcare and commercial settings:

  • Clinical environments — deodorants, medical sprays, cleaning agents.

  • Veterinary and tattoo studios — anaesthetic sprays, ink cleaners, disinfectants.

  • Care homes & pharmacies — air fresheners, wound care sprays, patient personal items.

With digital tracking, every aerosol load will be traceable from your site to final disposal — increasing scrutiny on brokers, carriers, and producers. This reinforces the need for licensed, compliant partners who can provide full consignment notes and audit trails.

How BWSL Helps Clients Stay Ahead

We’re already preparing for these changes:

  • Correct classification — we advise on aerosol waste codes and segregation.

  • Licensed collections — our partners are ADR-trained for flammable/hazardous loads.

  • Digital-ready — we’ll support clients with accurate recording once the system launches.

  • Cost-effective solutions — free containers where possible, competitive rates, single invoice.
